A new study details the economic impact of the city’s foreign-born population.

The city’s immigrant population is shrinking faster than Chicago’s as a whole, but it still accounts for a disproportionate share of local spending and tax contributions, according to a report touted by the Emanuel administration.
The findings, by immigration advocacy group New American Economy, started by former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, show 36 percent of Chicago’s entrepreneurs were foreign-born in 2016, the latest figures available to the study authors. That’s significantly more than the 20.7 percent immigrant share of the general population.
